Obstetrics

Your first pregnancy visit It is important for you to call and make an appointment as soon as you first find out that you are pregnant. In order to provide you with the highest level of care possible, Cornerstone Clinic desires to order certain tests very early on in pregnancy. These tests include things like blood type, pregnancy hormone levels, and progesterone levels. So please don't hesitate to call us at the first hint of pregnancy, even though your official prenatal care won't start till around 9 weeks along. Your first official prenatal visit is schedule around 9 weeks gestation. This is a longer appointment and usually includes an ultrasound where you can see your baby's heartbeat. We encourage your spouse, life partner, or support person to attend the visit with you. This is a detailed exam, health history intake and discussion of your personal risks related to things such as family history, age, and pregnancy history, if any. It is helpful to bring a list of any health conditions that run in your family or any additional questions you may have. Before the visit is complete you will find out the probable day your baby will be born! It is an exciting and fun visit and we are overjoyed that you would consider allowing us to participate in your very special event. We encourage you to ask any questions or address any concerns you have. Popular questions include diet advise, health and lifestyle changes, habit changes, sexual activity, hospital routines, the delivery process, and cost of prenatal care.

Prenatal care

Congratulations on this new and exciting part of your life! We are here to help you through every step of the pregnancy and birthing process. In general, at the beginning of your prenatal care, you will be seen every 4 weeks. As your pregnancy progresses, the duration in between appointments shortens. Towards the end of gestation, you will be seen once weekly or more. How often you are seen and what tests are performed above the standard screening and monitoring tests are based upon your individual response to pregnancy. Every pregnancy is different and requires a different level of observation and support. Rest assured we are here to help and guide you through the process. We recommend that you write down any questions that you think of in between each appointment in advance, so you don't forget anything during your actual appointment. Due to the nature of obstetrics and gynecology, and our respect for our patients, each employee assumes an obligation to maintain a high level of confidentiality. Patient information is held confidential ly, and only discussed with individuals who need this information to do their jobs.

Gynecology

Your First Women's Health Visit. Many women are very nervous about their first visit to a women's health provider. They may seek out care for the first time because of issues related to painful periods, irregular or heavy bleeding, or because they have chosen to become sexually active and need contraception. They may also be interested in testing for sexually transmitted illnesses. These subjects can be embarrassing to talk about, and we understand that. Rest assured that any information that you share is kept completely confidential. Even if you are under eighteen years old, the law specifically protects your privacy regarding women's health and female issues, and we will not disclose any information pertaining to these issues to anyone, including your parents, unless you advise us to do so. However, it is important to note that some tests do show up on insurance forms, and this is out of our control. We can discuss this with you and offer options as well as prepare you for possible outcomes. It is important to be open and honest with your provider, even about sensitive subjects such as sex, so that we can better care for you. The exam differs based on age and circumstance. The recommendations for pap smear exam, which is a test that looks for cervical cancer, has changed a lot since many of your female relatives first started getting exams. Here at Cornerstone Clinic we perform the first pap smear at age 21, regardless of sexual activity. We continue to perform this test every year after that. Your visit will consist of a physical exam that may include blood pressure, listening to your heart and lungs, a breast exam, and if warranted a pelvic exam (this is an exam of the outside and inside of your vagina and other reproductive organs). We will do our very best to be gentle and make this process as comfortable as possible. You may also need other tests that screen for things such as anemia, diabetes, thyroid disease, or sexually transmitted illnesses. The tests that your provider decides to order is based on your visit and circumstance. It may be helpful to write down a list of questions, symptoms, personal health history, family health history, daily medications, and allergies before your visit to ensure that we address all of your concerns safely and thoroughly.
